Common quick fixes

A .sor trace file won't open, or distances look wrong

MapYourOTDR reads industry-standard Telcordia SR-4731 .sor files. If a file misbehaves:

  1. Confirm the file extension is .sor (an OTDR export saved as .pdf or .csv will not parse).
  2. Open it from the Read tab so the iOS file picker grants the app access. No trace handy? Tap a built-in demo trace to explore every feature.
  3. If the span length looks off, type the known fiber range into the Manual span override field — the trace and all event distances recalibrate instantly.
  4. Distances reading in the wrong unit? Settings tab → Distance units (km, m, kft, mi).
  5. Still wrong? Email us the file and the expected length — vendor-specific .sor quirks are exactly the bug reports we want.
An analysis result or grade looks wrong

Most often it's a threshold or reference mismatch:

  1. Check your limits in Settings → Thresholds (splice, connector, reflectance, attenuation, ORL, loss budget). A "fail" may simply be a stricter limit than the link needs.
  2. One-way splice values carry backscatter-coefficient bias. For a true number, pair the reverse-direction trace and use bidirectional analysis (it averages both directions per ITU-T G.650.3).
  3. For a suspected bend, compare two wavelengths (e.g. 1310 and 1550 nm) with dual-wavelength macrobend — a bend loses more at the longer wavelength; a fusion splice stays roughly flat.
  4. Confirm the trace's group index is right; a wrong index shifts every event distance.

If you still believe a value is wrong, email the trace and your inputs. The analysis is grounded in public ITU-T, IEC, TIA, and Telcordia references, and we correct fast when something slips.

Text is too small, or I want a different look

Open the Settings tab. You can change the accent theme, the font, the font weight, and the text size independently. Reset appearance restores the defaults in one tap.

I want to start completely fresh

Settings tab → Clear all data. This permanently deletes your saved traces and baseline, clears favorites and report branding, and resets thresholds, units, and appearance. Your Pro unlock is kept — it lives on your Apple ID. The learning topics, calculators, and demo traces are built in and unaffected.

Frequently asked questions

Is the app free?

The app is free to download and the free tier is yours to keep: the trace viewer, basic analysis, demo traces, the core simulator, and 7 of the 23 LEARN topics. A one-time Pro unlock adds the full analysis engine (link health score, ORL, sections, loss budget, baseline comparison, bidirectional and dual-wavelength analysis), all 23 LEARN topics, every simulator fault type, configurable thresholds, and PDF/CSV export. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription — pay once, keep it forever.

How do I unlock Pro, and is it a subscription?

Open any Pro feature or the Settings tab and tap Unlock Pro. It's a single one-time purchase — there is nothing recurring and nothing to cancel. New installs also get a one-time 24-hour full-access trial so you can try everything before deciding.

I bought Pro — how do I get it on another device, or after reinstalling?

Your unlock is tied to your Apple ID. On the new device or after reinstalling, open the unlock screen and tap Restore Purchases. As long as you're signed in with the same Apple ID, Pro returns at no charge.

The app says "this upgrade isn't available yet" or can't reach the store

That message means the store was reached but didn't return the product — usually because a newly published in-app purchase is still propagating (it can take a few hours), or a temporary App Store hiccup. Make sure you're signed into the App Store on the device, then try again shortly. If Restore Purchases works but the unlock won't load, it's almost always propagation, not your connection.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Reading traces, analysis, baseline and bidirectional comparison, dual-wavelength detection, PDF and CSV reports, the learning topics, the calculators, and the simulator all work in airplane mode. The only time the app uses the network is when you tap Unlock Pro or Restore Purchases, which contacts Apple's App Store.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. Settings, saved traces, and reports stay on your device; .sor files are parsed locally and never uploaded. Apple processes the optional purchase and never shares your payment details with us. See the privacy policy — the app's App Store label is "Data Not Collected."

Which file types can it open?

OTDR trace files in the Telcordia SR-4731 .sor format — the standard export of EXFO, VIAVI, Anritsu, Yokogawa, and most other OTDRs.

Can I put my company on the PDF report?

Yes. Settings tab → Report branding: enter your company and technician name and they appear on the report header. Leave them blank to use the default MapYourOTDR header.

Does it run on iPad?

Yes, iPhone and iPad, iOS/iPadOS 17 or later.

Where do the analysis methods and limits come from?

Public standards and texts: Telcordia SR-4731 (the .sor record), ITU-T G.650.x measurement methods, ITU-T G.652/G.657 fiber specifications, IEC 61746, and TIA-568 component conventions. Distances use d = c·t/(2n) with the file's group index, and results distinguish pass/fail thresholds from engineering margins.
