Operation Types
MUX (Multiplex): Combines multiple optical channel powers into one composite power output. Used for calculating total power when combining multiple wavelengths or channels.
DEMUX (Demultiplex): Splits a composite optical power into multiple equal channel powers. Used for calculating per-channel power after splitting.
Power Units
dBm: Decibel-milliwatts, logarithmic power measurement referenced to 1 milliwatt (0 dBm = 1 mW).
mW: Milliwatt, linear power measurement commonly used in optical telecommunications.
W: Watt, linear power measurement (1 W = 1000 mW = 30 dBm).
Key Formulas
dBm to mW: P(mW) = 10^(P(dBm)/10)
mW to dBm: P(dBm) = 10 × log₁₀(P(mW))
MUX Composite Power: Sum of all channel powers in linear scale (mW), then convert to desired unit
DEMUX Per Channel Power: Composite power divided by number of channels
Insertion Loss: Power reduction factor = 10^(-Loss_dB/10)
Advanced Features
Insertion Loss: Accounts for power loss through optical components like splitters, couplers, and connectors. Enter the total loss in decibels.
Different Channel Powers: For MUX operation, specify individual power levels for each channel when they are not identical.
